As soon as someone starts asking, “what work do you do” I immediately try and change the subject! “But why?” Some of you might think.
Well, let me put it this way. In a group conversation, if I reply “a dietician” people immediately react by saying, “o!, so you make people thin”, or they would redirect their stare to your body to see if you are slender (as if we are not people who also struggle to lose weight!).
In a restaurant or eating out with people, even known friends, will say “dont judge my food” or “I will have to order a salad for this dietician”
Some will make a comment on what I order to eat, and then my answer is always the same “I am also a human, I also like food”.
From asking for free consultations and diet plans, looking at me to see if I am overweight, I just stopped saying what I do. BUT in reality, I LOVE what I do, I LOVE helping people.
That ICU patient that can’t eat on his own, the new mom who struggles to breastfeed, the newly diagnosed diabetic that doesn’t know what is happening in his own body. This is what I live for! That “thank you”, that appreciation of a sick person, that progress that the patient makes. Then…. it is all worth it.
Many people think I make the food in the hospital, or buys all the groceries, BUT I am MORE than that!
Yes my children is picky eaters, my family has weight issues, I couldn’t breastfeed, but I am still the best dietician I can be. I am a human, I am not special or lucky. I help people stay alive with food! And I MAKE a DIFFERENCE!
So this is me, a normal human being with a degree, some knowledge and lots of love for helping others
